Day 1 – Friday 6 Nov 2026
We’ll depart from the Marlborough Vintage Car Club via the Redwood Pass, before joining the Acheron Road for our journey through Molesworth Station. This vast high-country landscape, set behind the Inland Kaikōura Range, is a land of extremes—scree-scarred mountains, wide river valleys, and sweeping tussock slopes.
Travel along unsealed roads through New Zealand’s largest working farm, where grazing herds and remote scenery define the experience. Descend Jacks Pass into Hanmer Springs, finishing the day with alpine views and a relaxed evening at our overnight stop.
Leaving Hanmer Springs and climb back over Jacks Pass, rising to 891 metres before turning toward the Rainbow Road. Traveling through Rainbow Station, this high-country drive reveals some of the South Island’s most pristine scenery—mountain ranges stretching to the horizon, clear rivers, and hidden waterfalls. Crossing Island Saddle, the highest publicly accessible road in New Zealand at 1,347 metres (4,419 feet), we reach the high point of the journey before continuing past Lake Rotoiti.
From here, take the back road over the Braeburn Track, a gravel route through native bush that opens into farmland, finishing the day in Murchison for our overnight stop. From Hanmer Springs to Murchison via The Rainbow Road & Braeburn Track.
Start location: Amuri Ave West (Just down from the Thermal Pools)
Start time: Briefing 8 am

This day will be an adventure as it will involve alpine roads with fords.
Rainbow Road is an unsealed back-country road in New Zealand. It runs for 112 kilometers (70 mi) from HanmerSprings in Canterbury to Saint Arnaud in the Nelson Region
Lake Rotoroa lies within the borders of Nelson Lakes National Park. The lake is fed by the D’Urville and Sabine rivers. The greatest depth is 145 metres, and it has a surface area of just under 23.5 km. The lake is surrounded by beech forest.
Day 3 – Sunday 8 Nov 2026
We’ll start Day 3 winding our way over the Maruia Saddle, a gravel mountain pass full of twists and corners, before cruising along the Rahu Saddle, a bush‑clad route through lush native forest. Just before Reefton, enjoy a guided tour of a hidden West Coast mine, where impressive machinery and fascinating stories meet careful environmental practices.
After lunch in Reefton, travel along scenic farmland roads with an optional stop at the Pike River Mine memorial, finishing the day at a wild, rugged West Coast beach ahead of our evening celebration dinner.
